For class this week we went to the Columbus Zoo for the last time. It was great and tons of fun. I really enjoyed drawing the animals each trip. Here are a few of the best sketches from the trip.

Cafe Sketch Final
This is the final assignment for cafe sketch. We had to go back to one of our previous assignments and merge a human form with a creature/alien or animal. For most of the assignment, I chose to draw an alien pirate fighting a huge space beast. I drew from several fencing drawings I had done from the Arnold Classic and other reference. I also decided to draw hippos attempting to be ballerinas.

Cafe Sketch Bruckner Sketches Week 12
This week for class we went to the Bruckner Wildlife Conservation Center. It was a big park with lots of trails. They also had several fun animals to draw. Here are a few of the best sketches from the trip.
Cafe Sketch Silhouettes HW Week 12
This week we drew 50 silhouettes of animals we saw at the Bruckner Wildlife Conservatory. I chose to draw owls, squirrels, turkey vultures, foxes, and bobcats for this week.

Cafe Sketch Zoo Drawings Week 11
This week we went to the zoo to draw the animals. I felt like I had a really successful run at the zoo, and I got over 100 drawings of several different kinds of animals. My favorite animals to draw were the monkeys because they had fun poses. Also included in this set of 5 is a rhino and a binturong.
Cafe Sketch Zoo Skeletons HW Week 11
This week we had to draw skeletons from the animals we saw at the zoo. I chose to do a wide range of animals as I ended up wandering around a bit at the zoo. My favorite animals to draw were the monkeys because they swung around and did lots of fun poses. I had a hard time making "gestural" sketches of the skeletons as most of them were fairly complicated and I wasn't really sure how much to include.

Cafe Sketch Animal Studies Week 10 HW
This week we drew 10 sketches of four different kinds of animals and 10 details sketches. I chose to draw a snapping turtle, an otter, a flamingo, and a golden frog.
Cafe Sketch Dog and Wolf Class Week 10
This week in class we got to draw a dog owned by one of the graduate students at CCAD and a wolf from Ironwood Wolves! It was really cool to draw the wolf, but it was really difficult because he wasn't very happy to be in the room and kept walking all over the place. The dog was also a bit tricky to draw because she kept getting sad and just laid down most of the time. Here are the best 5 drawings from the session.

Cafe Sketch Cat Sanctuary Week 09 Classwork
This week for class we went to the cat sanctuary and rescue. They had over 320 cats there all running loose! It was pretty fun to draw them, but there wasn't much in the way of sitting (or standing). Here are the five best cat drawings from the session.
Cafe Sketch Mammal Drawings Week 09 Homework
This week for homework we had to draw a four-legged mammal of our choice. I chose to draw bears and had lots of fun doodling them. Bears get into some fun positions and have really unique faces. Here are 50 bears doing bear things.

Cafe Sketch Feline Studies Week 08 031414
For homework this week we had to choose from either drawing felines or canines of various breeds and do a series of head studies. I chose to draw short hair, long hair, and hairless cats. I feel like I had a rough time starting the assignment, but I got more comfortable with drawing the cats as I completed the assignment. I still feel like I need some practice drawing four-legged creatures, but I think this assignment and our cat house outing will help me feel more comfortable.
Cafe Sketch Alpacas Week 08 031414
This week we went to the alpaca show at OSU and drew alpacas all day. It was great! The alpacas didn't move much, which was both a blessing and a curse. I feel like I didn't get too many different poses of alpacas, but I think I ended up figuring out their anatomy pretty well by the end of the session. Here are my five best drawings from the outing.

Cafe Sketch Week 07 Homework 030714
This week we had to draw 30 sketches of one of the events from the Arnold Classic. I chose to draw fencing again. I had lots of fun drawing the uniforms and exaggerating the poses to get really dramatic figures. To be honest, I just really like drawing their helmets. I really liked drawing the fencers in a dodge position. Their dodges put them in a weird in-between state of totally off-balance and in-control.
Cafe Sketch Arnold Classic 030714
This week we went to the Arnold Classic to draw all of the weight lifting and sports competitions. It was lots of fun to go see all of the events. However, it was really crowded and I had a hard time finding a spot to draw in some events. Of all of the events, I liked fencing the best because it had some really fancy poses and the fencers were easily accessible. I also drew some weight lifters and a cool dude with his little girl on his back.

Cafe Sketch Week 06 Class Model and Ballet Met 022814
This week we had a model for the first half and then went to the Ballet Met for the second half. I feel like I got tons of great drawings of the model and this week I felt more confident in drawing the ballerinas. Here are my five best drawings.

Cafe Sketch Week 06 Muscular Tension HW 022814
This week we had to draw 40 examples of muscular tension in sheets of 10. I chose to draw the Strong Man competition from various sources on the internet. It was a lot of fun, but also I felt like I got bogged down on some of the musculature. I also had some issues digitizing the images as we needed to have the whole sheet as one image. My scanner was too small and for some reason, my camera wasn't wanting to take correctly exposed images tonight. Anywho, have a look at some ripped dudes being manly.

Cafe Sketch Week 05 Chiller Drawings
This week we went back to the Chiller in Easton to draw figure skaters again. I felt that drawing them was a little easier this time as I remembered many of the poses that I saw from our last outing. However, I think I may have gotten a little too comfortable with this session. When I was flipping through my sketchbook I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to post for this week, but not because I had too many good ones. The last time, I remember thinking I had tons of sketches I wanted to post, but this time I found myself drawing many identical poses. It didn't help that the skaters mostly went away during the second half of class either. However, that could all just be in my head. I drew several pages worth of the figure skaters, but I would have liked to have had more time with them last class.
I started drawing the free skaters on the other rink, but many of those drawings ended up feeling awkward, because, well, most of the people couldn't skate. Overall, I think I ended up with a few nice sketches that were a bit more dynamic than last time. I discovered a really nice technique of drawing with a Copic Marker to get the gesture and then quickly drawing over the marker with a pen to get the form. I feel like the ones I did in that style ended up the most successful. I also experimented with other markers and brush pens during class to vary things up a bit.

Cafe Sketch Week 04 Homework Clothed Figures in Motion 021414
This week we had to draw 50 clothed figures wearing loose clothing and in motion. It took a bit to find good reference, but I eventually stumbled across some channels on YouTube that had really nice videos of dancers in various loose dresses and long skirts. After I was all done, I played around with my new Copic marker and put some quick shading on my favorites for fun.
Cafe Sketch Week 04 Classwork Model and Ballet Met 021414
This week we drew from a model in the classroom and then went to Ballet Met to draw the dancers. It was really fun getting to watch the dancers at Ballet Met, but it was also super challenging. I thought it was a good exercise in remembering poses. I didn't like many of the sketches I did there, but I hope that with more practice at super fast drawing, I'll eventually be able to draw them well.

Cafe Sketch Week 3 Anatomy Studies 020714
For homework this week we had to trace over the drawings we did in class with skeletons and musculature. Many of my drawings were heavily foreshortened and seated so it was a little difficult to find more gestural poses for this assignment.
Cafe Sketch Week 3 Classwork 020714
This week we drew from two different models. I really enjoyed drawing this week because we did lots of 30 second poses, and I feel like those helped the energy of my drawings. However, I also had a hard time because many of the poses ended up being repetitious seated positions and I often ended up with an awkward view. I tried moving around but it didn't really help. Anyway, here are the five drawings I felt were the best from the session.

Weekly Homework 01/31/14
This week we had to draw sequential poses, sort of like a storyboard. I chose to draw pole vaulters, and in the below drawing, I illustrate the process of a vaulter launching himself over the bar. This set of five sketches was my favorite of the fifty as I feel like it best showed the progressive poses of the vaulting process. I did mostly 30 second poses as I wanted to get some energy into the drawings.
